Biography

Peter Härtling was born in Chemnitz in 1933. At the end of the war, his family fled to Austria, though his father was taken prisoner and died at the end of the war in a Russian prisoner of war camp. The family went to Nürtingen but, in 1946, his mother killed herself. After school he worked for the local paper and started to publish poetry. He became editor of the Heidenheimer Zeitung and continued as a journalist while trying to make a career as a writer. He has written novels, poetry, essays (especially on music) and much children's literature (he has four children). He has also been involved in politics, particularly environmental issues.
